Why education is overrated.I even went ahead to omit the 'I think' part in the title because this is no longer a value judgement, it is a plain fact. Education is overrated. I'm not saying education is worthless, but it just seems to me that people think of education in too high a regard that it should be deemed.
Yesterday, after work at Tanjong Pagar MRT station, I saw a caucasian man taking his turn at the General Ticketing Machine(GTM). I was diagonally behind him so I basically could see everything he was trying to do to the GTM. First he put his easy-link card atop the card reader. Then he fiddled here, meddled there and lifted his card off the card-reader, meanwhile feeling utterly clueless and bewildered as to why he couldn't top up his card.
Judging from his Charles Tyrwhitt dress-shirt, Hermes tie, and fully genuine leather briefcase, I postulate that he is a corporate professional. Maybe not top-rank, but aspiring to be. And definitely educated.
After various attempts to assault the machine and force it to accept his money, the machine won the fight. He then proceeded to turn around and tell the 7 people behind him that the machine is not working.
In all this while, I was waiting for my turn at the adjacent queue thinking what a dimwit this 'educated' fool is. Because stated clearly above the GTM, if he would be so considerate as to look up, are the words: Please remove card only when card-reader light turns green.'
Turns out the educated fucker can't read.
